Best of Brilliantdays.com: May 2005
Once a month will publish my review of the month behind us. May was the month when traffic went through the roof after I posted Getting things done with Automator and Spotlight. If you google “Getting things done with Automator and Spotlight” you get 167 hits as of today, and 93 people have bookmarked it at Del.icio.us.
David Allen posted a link to my blog. His book has changed my life. It would be close to impossible to organize a busy worklife, blogging, family, kids and friends without my Palm and the Next-action lists. See the GTD category for more posts on Productivity and “Getting things done”.
But May was so much more: Automator, chicks and Cory Doctorow, the PS3 grill, Liverpool winning, cool music and cool falling…
Automator
Fraser Speirs, author of the excellent Flickr Export iPhoto plugin, released a Flickr Automator action for Mac OS X 10.4. Orginal post here.
Greenhouse and chicks
Want to build a greenhouse in no time? Use the plan found at buildeazy.com. You could even add designer chicken houses (and chicken) from Omlet. Orginal post here.

Cory Doctorow to Oslo
Very interesting speech by Boingboing blogger Cory Doctorow.

“In the years from 1976 to 1984 the VCR was the hot thing to discuss. Jack Vilanti, former chairman of the MPAA, told a Congressional panel in 1982, “I say to you that the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone.” Laughter.” Original post here.
Apple Address Book – new features I would like
I talked about the Address book in Tiger a lot in May, here, here and here. These three posts are about the way Address Book handles websites for your contacts. It needs to be improved. If you have any comments on these, use the comments below, or check out my new about page for other ways of contacting me.
RSS feeds in Spotlight?
Try this: Go to a site that has an RSS-feed, like this one. Hit the blue RSS icon in Safari 1.3 (if you are running OS X 10.4). You then get a feed page for the site, like this:

Make a bookmark for the feed by hitting Apple-D. Save it somewhere in your bookmark and close the page. Now disconnect your computer from the net by pulling the ethernet cable or turning off Airport. Find the bookmark you just made. Now, see: The page is still there, even if the Mac isn’t connected to the net.
Which means: The feeds you bookmark with RSS are stored on your computer somewhere (If you know where exactly they are, use the comments below to tell me!). So why don’t the words on these pages show up in Spotlight searches? Original post here. If anyone has a clue why this doesn’t work, contact me!
The PS3 grill
Flickr user “Bluehaze the Druid” has posted a secret picture of the new PS3, coming out in good time before the BBQ season, spring 2006:

You’ll never walk alone…
Oh, what a night it was! I almost turned off the tv during the halftime break. But figured that wouldn’t be the right thing to do. Some days ago I read an article in a newspaper about some Norwegian Liverpool-fans going to Istanbul for the match. In the break someone behind them was starting singing (to the music of “Blue moon” (
“>itunes): “4-3, we’re gonna win it 4-3!” They were close!
And if you didnt read the story about the Liverpool and the Aston Villa shirt, read it here:
“Until the day when my father found out the some modern behaviour were to be introduced in our house. HE was going to wash our clothes. If I knew what would happen, I would have taken the fuzes in our house. And thrown them into the sea.
My father filled up the washing machine: His navy blue working clothes used when fishing, my brother’s and my sweaters, my mother’s underwear, bedwear and the Liverpool shirts and shorts. And the red socks. Then lots of washing detergent (lots of!), and the temperature on 90 degrees Celcius (194 Fahrenheit).”
Coolest record of the month
I bought the Verve remixed 3 album in May. Excellent album. Old classic jazz tunes from Nina Simone, Dina Washington, Billie Holiday etc., remixed by top people like Danger Mouse (the Grey album), Bent and Postal Service. Several people visiting asked about it.
Falling over, in the coolest way
Mark at Boingboing could have started a new meme without knowing it.
